Dear members,

I thought this article might be of interest to some of you. The Water Forum website provides water-related news. Unfortunately this website is only available in Dutch.

The article describes the increasing number of security measures related to high water levels that are being implemented by government institutions and companies on the east coast of the United States.

Energy company ConEdison is building flood walls to protect its infrastructure; Verizon uses a removable water barrier. The World Trade Center is also looking at ways to prevent flood damage. All stakeholders agree there is a need for an integral, regional approach. However, it is difficult to get everyone to agree. Research company Arcadis is now using American models ADCIRC and Flow 3D to develop an integrated plan on how the city of New York can be protected against floods. Arcadis proposes to use an integral approach, which might include a storm surge barrier in the Hudson river.
